Auditor-General uncovers N4.6b unapproved spending in Umahi’s ministry
A recent audit report has exposed financial mismanagement and unauthorized expenditures totalling over N4.64 billion in the Federal Ministry of Works (Housing Sector).
The findings, contained in the Auditor-General for the Federation’s Annual Report, which investigated activities between 2020 and 2021, reveal huge lapses in internal controls under Babatunde Fashola, the former Minister of Works and Housing.
The Auditor-General’s (AG) probe revealed that these funds were spent without approval, violating standard financial protocols and accountability measures.
Such findings highlight significant lapses in budgetary discipline and raise questions about governance practices within the affected ministry.
The audit emphasized the necessity for corrective measures, recommending the immediate recovery of the unapproved funds.
Furthermore, it proposed disciplinary actions against individuals or groups responsible for the breaches.
Meanwhile, transparency advocates have stressed the need for comprehensive reforms in the management of public finances, urging the government to take swift and decisive action.
However, the revelation about the N4.64 billion spending in Umahi’s ministry has drawn widespread attention.
