Suspected armed herders have killed a soldier and an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Udeku community, Benue State.

The incident occurred on Saturday, January 10, 2026, when the security personnel were ambushed while returning from Aga Market, where they had gone to refill their cooking gas.

The community leader, Mr. Lawrence Akerigba, confirmed the attack, stating that it had forced residents to flee and disrupted economic and social activities in the area.

The deceased officers were part of the security personnel deployed to maintain peace amid repeated attacks by suspected armed herders.

The NSCDC Public Relations Officer, Michael Ejelikwu, identified the slain officer as CCA Tijani Idris, service number 76691, from Kaduna State Command, seconded to Operation Whirl Stroke Joint Task Force.

The NSCDC remains committed to confronting insecurity despite the incident.

The attack is part of a recent surge in killings and attacks on farmers and security operatives in Benue State, following the US airstrike on ISWAP camps in Sokoto on December 25.
