Barcelona offers PSG Dembele & Gavi in exchange for Mbappe

Published

on

Barcelona reportedly offered Paris Saint-Germain Ousmane Dembele and Gavi in exchange for Kylian Mbappe, which has convinced the former to join the Ligue 1 champions.

Mbappe has been put up for sale by PSG after making it clear he will not trigger the one-year extension in his contract, which means he can leave as a free agent in 2024.

The Parisiens are desperate to get a transfer fee for the France captain and will be annoyed he rejected the chance to speak to Al-Hilal after accepting a £259million bid from the Saudi Pro League team.

There is a belief throughout the PSG hierarchy that Mbappe already has an agreement to join Real Madrid next summer and Al-Hilal were reportedly willing to spend a total of €1billion to have the French superstar for a single season, which would allow him to join Los Blancos for nothing.

A host of top European clubs have been linked with a move to sign Mbappe and it was recently claimed Barcelona were surprised by rumours they were targeting the PSG man.

The rumour mill has still been going strong, because why wouldn’t Barcelona want to get one over their bitter rivals Real Madrid?

According to L’Equipe, the La Liga champions proposed a very surprising swap including Dembele and Gavi.

Well, it is Dembele’s entourage who believe this is the case. The apparent offer has not gone down well and the French winger now wants to leave Barcelona to join PSG.

So, Barca offered to give PSG two of their best young players in exchange for the best player in the world. PSG (we assume) said no but will get one of the two players anyway because Barca upset him.

It is believed Dembele has a €50m release clause in his contract which expires at the end of July, so PSG might want to get a move on.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano said on Sunday that the deal “depends on” Dembele as the release clause is there to be triggered.

Romano later said the Barca winger has accepted PSG’s proposal after the club “verbally agreed” a five-year contract with his agent.

This deal is now all about timing as the release clause deadline fast approaches.

PSG are clearly reluctant to pay the €50m fee in one go and Dembele has now “asked” his club to “negotiate” a different transfer fee.

A separate report from L’Equipe actually hints that this could favour Barca.

As mentioned before, Dembele’s contract includes a €50m release clause despite costing the Catalan club €135m in 2017.

However, Barca’s financial problems meant they could not afford a loyalty bonus during contract negotiations last year, so they included a clause that would allow Dembele’s representatives to receive 50 per cent of a future transfer fee.

This means if the release clause is paid, Barca would only receive €25m, more than €100m less than what they paid Borussia Dortmund six years ago.

On the topic of contract deadlines; Mbappe has until midnight on Monday to trigger the one-year extension in his contract. Regardless of if he does so, he stands to make €60m on Tuesday thanks to a loyalty bonus in his contract, which has a hint of irony even if he is literally honouring his contractual terms with the club.
