Barcelona have reportedly reached a principle agreement with Manchester City to sign Spanish midfielder Rodri, bringing one of the biggest transfer sagas of the summer close to a conclusion.
The two clubs have been negotiating for several days, with Barcelona repeatedly improving their proposal for the 30 year old midfielder. Spanish reports now indicate that an agreement in principle has been reached, with both clubs exchanging the necessary documents before the transfer can be formally completed.
The development represents a major breakthrough for Barcelona, who have identified Rodri as one of their priority targets during the current transfer window.
Barcelona Finally Break Through
Barcelona’s pursuit of Rodri has been anything but straightforward.
The Catalan giants initially submitted a proposal believed to be worth around €45 million, but Manchester City rejected it. A second offer of approximately €60 million was also turned down as the English champions continued to demand a higher valuation for their star midfielder.
Barcelona subsequently returned with an improved package reported to be around €70 million, with the Spanish club hoping that the latest proposal would finally satisfy City’s financial demands.
Those negotiations now appear to have produced a breakthrough.
Reports from Spain indicate that the clubs have reached a principle agreement and are currently completing the documentation required to finalise the transfer.
If the remaining formalities are completed as expected, Rodri will travel to Barcelona for his medical examination before signing his contract and being officially unveiled as a new Blaugrana player.
A Dream Return to Spain
For Rodri, the proposed move would represent a return to Spanish football after several highly successful years in England.
The midfielder joined Manchester City from Atletico Madrid in 2019 and quickly established himself as one of the most important players in Pep Guardiola’s side.
His ability to control matches from deep midfield, dictate the tempo and provide protection for the defence transformed him into one of the Premier League’s most influential midfielders.
Rodri has also enjoyed extraordinary success at international level with Spain. His technical quality, tactical intelligence and composure have made him a central figure in the national team.
His individual achievements reached another level in 2024 when he won the Ballon d’Or, becoming the first Manchester City player to receive the prestigious individual award.
His potential arrival at Barcelona would therefore represent far more than another transfer. It would bring an established world class midfielder into the heart of Hansi Flick’s team.
Deco Plays Key Role
Barcelona sporting director Deco has reportedly been heavily involved in the negotiations as the club attempted to find a financial formula acceptable to Manchester City.
The operation has required considerable work because of Barcelona’s financial limitations and City’s determination to receive a substantial fee for a player of Rodri’s quality.
The latest developments suggest that Deco’s efforts have finally paid off, with the clubs now moving towards the final stages of the operation.
Barcelona’s interest in Rodri is also understandable from a sporting perspective.
The club has been searching for greater control and experience in midfield, and Rodri’s style fits naturally into the possession based football associated with Barcelona.
His ability to operate as a deep lying midfielder could give Flick another elite option for controlling games against opponents who defend deep or attempt to press aggressively.
Huge Blow for Manchester City
While Barcelona supporters will celebrate the expected arrival, Manchester City face the difficult task of replacing one of the most important players of the modern era.
Rodri has been fundamental to City’s success since arriving from Atletico Madrid. His departure would leave a major gap in the centre of the pitch, particularly because of his ability to combine defensive intelligence with exceptional passing and ball retention.
City manager Enzo Maresca has remained cautious when discussing Rodri’s future, previously refusing to rule out movement before the transfer window closes.
The English club have already been examining potential midfield replacements.
Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez has been linked with City, while Lille youngster Ayyoub Bouaddi is also reportedly close to joining the club. Manchester City have also spent heavily on Elliot Anderson as they reshape their midfield options.
That means Rodri’s departure could trigger another major chain of transfers before the window closes.
Barcelona Preparing for a Major Presentation
For Barcelona, attention will now turn towards completing Rodri’s medical and contract formalities.
The midfielder is expected to undergo the necessary checks before putting pen to paper, provided there are no last minute complications.
His arrival would be one of Barcelona’s most significant transfers of the summer and could dramatically strengthen Flick’s squad ahead of the new campaign.
After weeks of negotiations, the message coming from Spain is increasingly clear: Rodri is on the verge of becoming a Barcelona player.
The final paperwork and medical remain important steps, but the reported agreement between Barcelona and Manchester City has moved the blockbuster transfer closer than ever to completion.
