Barely 24 Hours After Tinubu Visit, Gunmen Kill One in Plateau

Less than 24 hours after President Bola Tinubu visited Jos, Plateau State, to reassure residents and victims of recent violence, a fresh attack has killed 51-year-old Dalyop Betobeje in the Jol community, Riyom Local Government Area.

The attack, reportedly by suspected terrorists from the Rankum (Mahanga) area, occurred around 6:56 a.m. on Friday and has been described by local leaders as a direct affront to ongoing peace efforts.

This follows an earlier deadly assault in Heipang District, Bassa Local Government Area, where gunmen suspected to be herdsmen killed a secondary school student, Gloria Godwin, injured several others, and destroyed property.

The Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) condemned the attacks as “brutal and senseless,” urging sustained security interventions and justice for the victims. Chairman Jacob Pam Chall called for thorough investigations and prosecution of perpetrators.

During his visit on Wednesday, President Tinubu assured residents of the federal government’s commitment to restoring lasting peace, saying, “I promise you this experience will not repeat itself.”

However, Thursday’s renewed violence underscores the fragility of security in rural Plateau communities and the urgent need for decisive measures to protect residents.
