Basketball: Nigeria thrash Argentina 2 days beating after USA
The Nigerian men’s national basketball squad, D’Tigers destroyed Argentina 94-71 ahead of the Tokyo Olympics.
The winning came just two days after the Nigeria basketball team beat team USA 90-87.
D’Tigers went against old foes, Argentina, as a continuation of their 2021 Olympics preparation.
The Nigerian team played Argentina in the 2012 Olympics, 2016 Olympics, and the 2019 FIBA World Cup, including many exhibition matches.
On Monday, the Nigerian side posted a win over world No. 4 Argentina with a resounding 23-points.
It could be recalled that Argentina defeated Nigeria 93-79 at the 2012 Olympics.

Before the match, the head Coach of D’Tigers, Mike Brown announced that he has officially commenced preparation for the 2020 Olympic Games with the invitation of 49 players as camp opens in California, the United States.
Some D’Tigers supporters remarked after the Argentina thrashing that the team beat the No. 1 team in the world, as well as beat the No. 4 team in the world.
The Nigerian side came up with some big names in the starting lineup such as:
- Josh Okogie
- Gabe Nnamdi Vincent
- Nwamu Nwamu
- Kezeie Okpala, and,
- Precious Achiuwa
At the end of the first quarter, Nigeria trailed 2 points behind Argentina 19-17.
However, midway through the second quarter, Nigeria was already leading Argentina 29-21.
It soon spiralled with Nigeria leading 38-27.
With Jahlil Okafor’s eight points off the bench, Nigeria was comfortably leading Argentina 29-21 and was up ten points clear at halftime.
Twelve points for Precious Achiuwa and back to back threes for Kezie saw Nigeria leading Argentina 59-46.
It was NIGERIA 74 – Argentina 55 at the end of third quarter.
Nigeria was leading the fourth ranked team in the world by 24 points in the fourth quarter.

Following the awesome defeat, he Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) dedicated the victories against the United States and Argentina to late Olanrewaju Fasasi a.k.a. Sound Sultan.
In a post on its Twitter handle, NBBF tweeted:
“We dedicate the victories against US & Argentina to late Olanrewaju Fasasi (@Soundsultan).
“You saw this day coming when Nigeria would become a dominant force in global basketball
“Ironically, the day we won against @usabasketball, that was when you gave up the ghost.”
