Bayern Munich continued their impressive Bundesliga campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Mainz 05 on Saturday, thanks to first-half and second-half goals from Joshua Kimmich and teenage forward Lennart Karl.
Harry Kane was instrumental in the victory, providing assists for both goals as the German champions extended their unbeaten away run in the Bundesliga to 31 matches.
Bayern arrived at the MEWA Arena looking to strengthen their position at the top of the table following their midweek Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid. However, Mainz were determined to make life difficult for the visitors despite their recent struggles.
The visitors quickly established control of possession and applied pressure through their aggressive pressing, forcing Mainz into mistakes while searching for an early breakthrough.
Their dominance paid off in the 14th minute when Kimmich opened the scoring with a powerful strike from outside the penalty area. Kane capitalised on a misplaced pass from Jae-sung Lee, won possession and intelligently laid the ball into Kimmich’s path. The Bayern midfielder advanced before unleashing a fierce right-footed effort from approximately 17 metres, sending the ball into the top corner beyond the reach of goalkeeper Robin Zentner.
Bayern nearly doubled their advantage just three minutes later when Nathaniel Brown connected with an opportunity inside the penalty area, but his effort failed to find the back of the net. Dayot Upamecano also threatened with a header in the 18th minute, only for Zentner to keep Mainz in the contest.
Mainz gradually found their rhythm and began competing more aggressively in midfield, but Bayern remained dangerous whenever they recovered possession.
The visitors came close to extending their lead in the 36th minute when Lennart Karl produced an excellent pass behind the Mainz defence to release Kane. The England captain found himself one-on-one with Zentner but could not beat the goalkeeper, who made an important save to prevent Bayern from going 2-0 ahead.
Mainz thought they had restored parity in the 42nd minute when Jae-sung Lee headed home following a free-kick delivered by Nadiem Amiri. However, Bayern’s celebrations were avoided as a lengthy VAR review established that the South Korean midfielder had been in an offside position, resulting in the goal being disallowed.
The incident also brought an unfortunate end to Manuel Neuer’s afternoon. The Bayern captain suffered a foot injury during the passage of play and was unable to continue, forcing the visitors to introduce Jonas Urbig in the 40th minute.
Neuer’s substitution was particularly disappointing because the 40-year-old had made history before kick-off, becoming Bayern Munich’s oldest-ever player at 40 years and 225 days.
Bayern went into the interval with a deserved 1-0 advantage but returned for the second half determined to increase their lead.
The visitors continued to dictate the tempo and eventually found their second goal in the 57th minute through Karl.
Kane was once again involved in the decisive moment. After seeing his initial effort blocked by the Mainz defence, the Bayern striker recovered possession and directed the loose ball into Karl’s path. The 18-year-old showed excellent composure to guide a right-footed finish past the advancing Zentner and make it 2-0.
The goal was another important moment in Karl’s remarkable rise, coming shortly after he had also found the net against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.
Bayern remained in control and came close to adding a third when Kimmich tested Zentner from a tight angle. The Mainz goalkeeper produced another important intervention to keep the scoreline respectable.
Mainz attempted to respond through their attacking substitutions, introducing Benedict Hollerbach and Phillip Tietz as they searched for a way back into the contest.
However, Bayern continued to threaten. In the 85th minute, Alphonso Davies saw his effort cleared by Eric Martel just before the ball crossed the goal line, denying the visitors another opportunity to put the result beyond doubt.
Upamecano also came agonisingly close to scoring when he connected with a Nathaniel Brown cross, but his powerful header struck the crossbar, leaving Mainz with a chance of mounting a late comeback.
The hosts eventually found a consolation goal in the 90th minute plus three when Hollerbach delivered a dangerous cross from the left flank. Tietz rose above Jonathan Tah and directed a well-placed header beyond Urbig to reduce the deficit to 2-1.
The late goal briefly raised hopes of a dramatic finish, but Bayern remained composed during the closing moments to secure all three points.
Kimmich’s influential display earned him the Man of the Match recognition after opening the scoring and contributing significantly to Bayern’s control of the encounter.
The victory takes Bayern Munich to 21 points from nine Bundesliga matches, keeping them ahead of Borussia Dortmund on goal difference. The result also extends their remarkable unbeaten away league run to 31 matches.
For Mainz, the defeat represents another frustrating result as they continue searching for consistency, while Bayern head into the international break with their position at the top of German football strengthened.
