Benue Massacre: EU Allocates ₦886m Humanitarian Aid

The European Union (EU) has announced a humanitarian aid package of €500,000 equivalent to ₦886 million to support thousands of displaced residents in Benue State.

This funding comes as the state battles a worsening crisis fueled by violent attacks and mass displacement.

The aid will run for six months in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM). It targets urgent needs in key areas such as shelter, clean water, hygiene, sanitation, and protection.

Many displaced families have been living in overcrowded camps with little to no access to basic services.

Benue’s humanitarian crisis has lingered since 2018.

However, violence has intensified in recent years. In June 2025 alone, nearly 23,000 people fled their homes due to brutal armed attacks.

This brought the total number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) to over 1.5 million across the state.

According to EU officials, the situation requires swift and sustained intervention.

“Thousands of people in Benue are living in distress. This support is part of the EU’s ongoing commitment to easing their suffering,” an official stated.

The crisis has also claimed lives. More than 6,900 people have died in violent clashes across 2024 and 2025.

Over 400,000 residents have been displaced during this period. With state resources stretched thin, international help is crucial.

The aid will also include multi-purpose financial support to help victims afford basic needs. Many have lost everything homes, farmlands, and livelihoods. For them, this support could mean a lifeline.

Humanitarian groups working in Benue have welcomed the EU’s intervention.

They say the funding will offer hope and help stabilize vulnerable communities.

As the violence continues, residents and aid workers alike are calling for more global attention to the crisis.

The EU’s ₦886m aid to Benue may not solve everything, but it offers a vital start.
