Biden hits back at Trump's comment on his cognitive health

Joe Biden, on Thursday, June 5, 2025, criticized Donald Trump for launching an investigation into his presidency, accusing the former president of using the inquiry as a political “distraction.”

According to online media reports, Trump’s probe alleges that Biden’s senior aides concealed his cognitive decline and made decisions on his behalf during his time in office.

Biden responded firmly, denying these claims and framing the investigation as a tactic to divert attention from Trump’s controversial legislative agenda.

In a statement widely distributed to U.S. media outlets, Biden argued that Trump and congressional Republicans were attempting to push through a major bill.

This bill was largely criticized for imposing massive tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations while slashing social welfare programs vital to millions of Americans.

Biden said,

“This is nothing more than a distraction by Donald Trump and congressional Republicans who are working to push disastrous legislation that would cut essential programs like Medicaid and raise costs on American families, all to pay for tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy and big corporations.”

Biden emphasized his direct responsibility for decisions made during his administration, including pardons, executive orders, legislation, and proclamations.

“Let me be clear: I made the decisions during my presidency.

“I made the decisions about the pardons, executive orders, legislation and proclamations.

“Any suggestion that I didn’t is ridiculous and false,” he stated.

Trump has frequently attacked Biden, particularly focusing on the latter part of Biden’s presidency.

Among the more extreme allegations, Trump promoted a conspiracy theory.

He claimed Biden was executed in 2020 and replaced by a robotic clone, though such theories have been widely debunked.

However, broader concerns about Biden’s mental sharpness and physical health have circulated.

This is especially following the publication of a book co-authored by CNN anchor Jake Tapper.

The book detailed Biden’s physical and cognitive decline as his presidency progressed, noting that these issues intensified as the 2024 election approached.

During the 2024 campaign, Biden’s struggles became more apparent.

After a poor debate performance heightened doubts about his mental fitness and age, he withdrew from the race.

His vice president, Kamala Harris, stepped in as the Democratic candidate but ultimately lost the November 2024 election to Trump.

In his announcement of the investigation, Trump directed White House counsel Pam Bondi and the attorney general, along with other officials, to make an investigation.

They were to investigate “whether certain individuals conspired to deceive the public about Biden’s mental state and unconstitutionally exercise the authorities and responsibilities of the president.”

The probe is particularly focused on Biden’s use of an autopen.

The autopen is a mechanical device that replicates a person’s authentic signature, traditionally used by U.S. presidents to sign executive orders and legislation.

Trump called Biden’s use of the autopen “one of the most dangerous and concerning scandals in American history.”

His comment suggested that it concealed the true extent of Biden’s incapacity while enabling radical policy shifts without his direct involvement.

This announcement comes amid fierce opposition to Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.”

It is reportedly a sweeping legislative proposal currently facing pushback from various political figures, including some of Trump’s former allies.

For example, Elon Musk, who had previously supported Trump’s government spending cuts, has condemned the bill as a “disgusting abomination.”

The legislation itself proposes roughly $3.75 trillion in tax cuts.

It would extend the expiring 2017 individual income tax breaks and introduce new provisions Trump campaigned on, such as eliminating taxes on tips.

To offset some of the revenue loss, the bill aims to reduce nearly $1.3 trillion in federal spending, chiefly through cuts to Medicaid and food assistance programs.

Analysts warn that these changes would have severe consequences for millions of Americans.

An estimated 7.8 million people would reportedly lose health insurance due to modifications in Medicaid.

These include 5.2 million individuals who would be affected by proposed new work requirements targeting non-disabled adults under 65, with some exceptions.

Additionally, approximately 1.4 million undocumented immigrants currently covered by state-funded health programs would lose their access to medical care.

The ongoing political battle over Trump’s bill and the investigation into Biden’s presidency highlight deep divisions in U.S. politics.

Biden’s camp views the probe as a diversion designed to shift attention away from the harmful effects of the Republican-led legislative agenda.

On the other hand, Trump insists it is necessary to reveal alleged abuses of power and deception within Biden’s administration.
