The National Agency for Food Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has disclosed that the bread being sold in the markets is failing laboratory tests after more bakers resorted to the use of saccharine due to the high cost of sugar.
Mrs Roseline Ajayi, NAFDAC Southwest Coordinator, said random bread tests showed that some are not suitable for human consumption because some unapproved ingredients were added as substitutes for more expensive approved ingredients.
She said since the cost of sugar had gone up, some bakers were using saccharine that had been proven to be damaging to human health.
Ajayi also warned patent medicine dealers, water producers, and other manufacturers of regulated products against selling fake and substandard products.
Ajayi was speaking at a stakeholders engagement meeting organised by the agency, on Friday, in Ibadan.
She said the report gathered by the agency during its recent operation showed that some patent medicine dealers were selling restricted drugs and unregistered products
