The Catholic Diocese of Nsukka has announced with deep sorrow the passing of her Bishop Emeritus, Most Rev. Dr. Francis Emmanuel Ogbonna Okobo, who died on Friday, August 29, 2025, at the age of 89, after a brief illness.
Bishop Okobo, remembered as the first Bishop of the Diocese of Nsukka, played a historic role in shaping the spiritual, structural, and pastoral foundation of the diocese.
His leadership marked a turning point in the Catholic Church’s presence in Nsukka, as he devoted his life to building a diocese rooted in faith, unity, and service.
Born on November 4, 1936, Bishop Okobo was ordained a Catholic priest on June 4, 1966.
After decades of dedicated priestly service, he was appointed by Pope John Paul II as the pioneer bishop of the Diocese of Nsukka on November 19, 1990. His episcopal ordination followed shortly after, on January 6, 1991, in Rome.
During his 22 years as bishop, Bishop Okobo worked tirelessly to build parishes, encourage vocations, and strengthen the faith of the people entrusted to his care.
He was widely regarded as a shepherd with vision, humility, and a deep love for his flock. Priests and parishioners often recall his calm guidance, fatherly advice, and unwavering commitment to the growth of the Church.
Under his leadership, Nsukka Diocese saw the expansion of Catholic institutions, schools, and pastoral programs that continue to serve thousands today.
His efforts not only deepened Catholic spirituality in the region but also raised the profile of Nsukka within the Nigerian Catholic Church.
After reaching the retirement age, Bishop Okobo stepped down on April 13, 2013, handing over to Bishop Godfrey Igwebuike Onah.
Even in retirement, he remained a symbol of wisdom and continuity for the diocese, often offering prayers and counsel.
The news of his death has prompted an outpouring of grief across Nsukka and beyond.
Many parishioners have described him as “a father, a teacher, and a shepherd who led with love and patience.” Others recall his devotion to service and his tireless effort in laying a strong foundation for future generations.
As the Diocese of Nsukka mourns this great loss, the faithful take comfort in the belief that Bishop Okobo has gone to rest in the Lord whom he served faithfully for almost 60 years.
