Christiano Ronaldo extends stay at Al-Nassr to 2027

Cristiano Ronaldo on Thursday, June 26, 2025, put weeks of speculation to rest by signing a two-year contract extension with Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr, confirming he will remain with the team until 2027.

The announcement came Thursday via a post on X (formerly Twitter), where the club proudly declared: “Cristiano Ronaldo is staying at @AlNassrFC until 2027.”

Just moments before the official statement, the club released a teaser video featuring Ronaldo walking along a beach and declaring, “Al Nassr forever.”

This was a short but powerful message that instantly went viral among fans.

Now 40, Ronaldo first joined the Riyadh-based club in early 2023, becoming the marquee signing of Saudi Arabia’s ambitious plan to elevate its domestic football league.

His arrival triggered a wave of veteran stars moving to the Saudi Pro League, enticed by lucrative contracts and the promise of being part of a high-profile football transformation.

Last month, Ronaldo hinted at uncertainty about his future when he posted a cryptic message, “This chapter is over,” on social media.

This was just hours after Al Nassr ended their season third in the league and without a trophy.

The post sparked a flurry of rumors linking the Portuguese icon with potential moves to Major League Soccer, Brazil, or even a final return to Europe.

However, the speculation has now been firmly laid to rest.

Despite his club’s lack of silverware, Ronaldo was a standout performer.

He finished the season as the Saudi Pro League’s top scorer, netting 25 goals.

Yet Al Nassr’s campaign ended in disappointment, falling short in both domestic and continental competitions, including a semifinal exit in the AFC Champions League.

“Ronaldo’s presence is a key factor in developing the Saudi league in the last two years and a half.

“He opens the door for elite and young players to come to Saudi Arabia,” a senior figure from the Public Investment Fund (PIF) told AFP last month.

The PIF, Saudi Arabia’s oil-rich sovereign wealth fund, is a major stakeholder in the country’s football renaissance and directly oversees several clubs including Al Nassr, Al Hilal, and Al Ahli.

Saudi Arabia’s football ambitions go far beyond club competitions.

With the country confirmed as host of the 2034 FIFA World Cup, the kingdom is determined to turn itself into a football powerhouse.

Ronaldo’s continued presence is seen as essential to maintaining the momentum of this transformation, both in terms of attracting global attention and setting performance benchmarks for local players.

The Saudi Pro League has become a showcase for stars such as Karim Benzema and, until recently, Neymar.

Neymar left Al Hilal in January after an injury-plagued 18-month spell.

Some critics have likened Saudi Arabia’s rapid football growth to the boom-and-bust of China’s Super League, which collapsed due to unsustainable spending.

However, Saudi Arabia’s football project seems more closely tied to long-term national goals, such as diversifying the economy and boosting tourism.

Ronaldo himself has spoken positively about his time in the kingdom.

Last year, he even suggested he might end his illustrious career at Al Nassr, a team favored by many members of the Saudi royal family.

His new contract extension suggests he is staying true to that intention, as he edges closer to retirement.

The deal, reportedly worth hundreds of millions, reaffirms Ronaldo’s position as one of the most celebrated footballers of his generation.

It also reaffirms his position as a central figure in Saudi Arabia’s sporting revolution.

When he first arrived, critics saw it as a retirement move, a final payday in a lesser-known league.

Today, it’s clear that Ronaldo has become more than just a player, he’s the face of a broader cultural and sporting shift in the Middle East.

With at least two more seasons in Saudi Arabia ahead of him, the pressure is now on Ronaldo and Al Nassr to deliver the trophies that have eluded them so far.

For fans, the hope is simple: that the football legend will finally add Saudi silverware to his illustrious career and inspire a new era in Asian football while doing so.
