BREAKING: Insecurity forces residents to flee Kwara, ADC raises alarm

(DDM) – Residents of Ifelodun Local Government Area in Kwara State are reportedly abandoning their homes as insecurity spreads across the communities.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that families in the local government have begun relocating due to increasing unrest, sparking fears of mass displacement if urgent action is not taken.

The alarm was raised in a statement issued by Ibraheem Alfa Abdulrasheed Gbagba, the Kwara State Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Gbagba warned that the security situation in Ifelodun had deteriorated to the point where many residents no longer feel safe to remain in their ancestral homes.

He stressed that the Kwara State Government is aware of the growing tension but has not provided adequate intervention to restore confidence among citizens.

According to him, “the people of Ifelodun are packing out of the community due to insecurities in the town, and the situation is getting out of hand.”

The ADC urged the government to “double efforts” in addressing the unrest, insisting that security agencies must be mobilised to contain the threats before they escalate further.

Ifelodun Local Government is the largest by landmass in Kwara State and home to several farming settlements.

Observers warn that the ongoing displacement could cripple agricultural productivity in the area, worsening food insecurity and economic hardship for thousands of families.

Kwara State has generally enjoyed relative peace compared to some other North-Central states like Niger and Benue, which have been plagued by banditry and farmer-herder conflicts.

However, recent incidents in parts of Kwara, including Ifelodun, Edu, and Kaiama, suggest that insecurity is spreading into new areas previously considered stable.

Security analysts believe Ifelodun’s geographical size and rural terrain make it vulnerable to infiltration by criminal elements, including kidnappers and armed bandits who exploit unguarded farmlands and remote roads.

The ADC’s intervention reflects growing frustration among citizens and opposition parties who accuse the government of being slow to respond to urgent security challenges.

Political commentators say the warning is a reminder that insecurity has become a defining test for leaders at both federal and state levels in Nigeria.

Many residents of Ifelodun have reportedly appealed for increased military and police patrols, as well as community-based security arrangements to protect villages from criminal attacks.

Traditional rulers and community leaders in the area are also said to be under pressure from displaced families seeking refuge in neighbouring local governments.

DDM notes that the situation in Ifelodun mirrors a broader national problem where citizens are forced to flee homes due to the inability of security agencies to guarantee safety.

The Kwara State Government is now under mounting pressure to address the crisis urgently before Ifelodun becomes another hotspot of mass displacement in the North-Central region.

For many residents, the key demand remains simple: the government must act quickly to restore peace and protect lives and properties before the situation spirals beyond control.
