Security operatives, including police and plainclothes agents, clashed with protesters in Abuja on Monday, resulting in the dispersal of the crowd and several injuries.
The protesters, led by Omoyele Sowore, were demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Police fired multiple rounds of tear gas, forcing protesters to flee in different directions.
Several people fainted, while many others sustained injuries as the air became thick with choking smoke from the tear gas.
Security forces, including soldiers and DSS operatives, have taken control of strategic parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), sealing off key areas, including the Three Arms Zone and Eagle Square.
Despite a warning from the Nigeria Police Force to stay clear of restricted areas, organizers vowed to proceed with the protest, accusing President Bola Tinubu’s administration of disregarding the rule of law and disobeying valid court orders.
