DDM News

(DDM) – Former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, has died at the age of 78.
The respected elder statesman passed away peacefully on Saturday, according to a statement issued by his family.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather; Chief Audu Ogbeh,” the family said.
The statement confirmed that Ogbeh died on August 9, 2025, describing his years as “a fulfilled age of 78.”
Born in 1947, Chief Audu Ogbeh rose to national prominence through a career marked by public service, political leadership, and agricultural reform.
The family described him as a man who “departed peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, service, and dedication to our nation and community.”
“We are comforted by the many lives he touched and the example he set,” the statement added.
Funeral details are expected to be announced in due course.
The family expressed appreciation to friends, colleagues, and well-wishers for their prayers and support during this period of mourning.
They also appealed for privacy as they grieve the loss of their patriarch.
DDM recalls that Ogbeh served as Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development from 2015 to 2019 under President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
During his tenure, he championed food security initiatives, agricultural mechanisation, and policies aimed at reducing Nigeria’s dependence on imported staples.
He was widely respected for his straightforward communication style and commitment to rural development.
Before his ministerial role, Ogbeh had a long history in Nigerian politics, including service as National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from 2001 to 2005.
His political journey began much earlier, with his election to the Benue State House of Assembly in 1979, where he quickly distinguished himself as an articulate legislator.
Beyond politics, Ogbeh was a successful farmer and agribusiness entrepreneur, often using his personal experience to advocate for policies that would benefit smallholder farmers.
Tributes have begun to pour in from political leaders, colleagues, and citizens across the country.
Many described him as a bridge between generations, able to connect with both seasoned politicians and young Nigerians passionate about agriculture.
International organisations also recognised Ogbeh for his contributions to sustainable agriculture and rural livelihoods in West Africa.
His death marks the passing of a figure deeply embedded in Nigeria’s political and agricultural history.
For many, Chief Audu Ogbeh’s life story remains a testament to service, resilience, and an unwavering belief in Nigeria’s potential.
The nation now prepares to honour his memory in the days ahead.
