(DDM) — Panic gripped residents and motorists in Anambra State after a gas tanker carrying Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) burst into flames along the busy Awka-Enugu Expressway.

Eyewitnesses said the incident, believed to have been triggered by an electrical fault, caused a sudden fire outbreak that quickly engulfed the tanker, sending thick smoke into the sky and forcing road users to flee the scene.

The explosion created widespread fear in the area, as nearby traders and residents hurriedly evacuated to avoid potential casualties and destruction.

Motorists were seen abandoning their vehicles and running for safety as the fire intensified, raising concerns about a possible secondary explosion.

Emergency responders, including firefighters, were swiftly deployed to the scene and worked to contain the blaze before it could spread to nearby buildings and vehicles.

Officials later confirmed that the fire was successfully brought under control, preventing what could have resulted in a far more devastating disaster.

Although no immediate fatalities were reported, authorities noted that the situation posed a serious threat to lives and property due to the highly flammable nature of the gas being transported.

Traffic along the expressway was severely disrupted as security personnel cordoned off the area to allow emergency operations and ensure public safety.

Residents in the vicinity described the incident as terrifying, noting that the intensity of the flames and the sound of the explosion caused widespread panic.

Safety experts have reiterated the need for strict adherence to transportation and maintenance standards for gas tankers to prevent similar incidents.

They also emphasized the importance of regular inspection of tanker vehicles to detect electrical faults or mechanical issues before they lead to emergencies.

Authorities are expected to launch an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire and assess any possible lapses in safety compliance.

The incident adds to growing concerns over tanker-related accidents on Nigerian highways, which have in recent years resulted in significant loss of lives and property.

As calm gradually returns to the area, residents are calling on government agencies to enforce stricter safety regulations to prevent future occurrences.
