What happened with the AN-24 aircraft

Flight Overview

The AN-24, operated by Angara Airlines, took off from Blagoveshchensk and was en route to Tynda Airport in Russia’s Amur region.

Tragically, the plane vanished from radar just before landing and later crashed into a mountainside.

No survivor was recorded among the 49 people onboard, including five children and six crew members.

Conditions at the Time

The aircraft was reportedly flying normally until it encountered poor weather, including low cloud and rain.

A rescue helicopter spotted the wreckage, but the terrain made immediate access difficult.

Aircraft History & Safety Concerns

The AN-24 was a 49-year-old Soviet-era turboprop, still in use due to Western sanctions impacting Russia’s aviation sector.

It had previously sustained damage in 2018 after hitting a lightning mast but was deemed airworthy after repairs.

Pilot Details & Legal Issues

The co-pilot, Kirill Plaksin, was due in court the same day for refusing a drug test, adding a controversial dimension to the tragedy.

Both he and captain Vyacheslav Logvinov, a veteran pilot, perished in the crash.

Aftermath

  • A criminal investigation has been launched.
  • A 25-person rescue team has been sent to the crash site.

The tragic incident, according to experts, highlights ongoing issues around aircraft maintenance and safety regulation in remote regions.

Wreckages from the aircraft have been found at the site of the plane crash.
