Several Nigerian soldiers were injured in a surprise terrorist ambush while on a rescue mission to recover schoolgirls abducted in Kebbi State.
The attack occurred less than 24 hours after Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, gave a directive to troops under Operation Fasan Yamma to go “all out” in tracking down the perpetrators of the abduction at Government Girls Secondary School, Maga.
Shaibu had emphasized the urgency of the mission, instructing commanders to rely on intelligence-based operations and maintain round-the-clock efforts until the students were safely rescued.
“This is not just about our image; it is about doing our job properly,” he stressed.
As the soldiers mobilized to comply with these orders, they were ambushed by terrorists, leaving several troops injured.
Reports indicate that some of the wounded soldiers were seen without immediate medical attention, with one victim, speaking in Hausa, lamenting the dire condition of his comrade: “Musa has a bullet lodged in his leg. His condition is very bad.”
Their operational vehicle was also severely damaged, riddled with bullet holes during the assault.
The incident underscores the significant challenges faced by the military in addressing Nigeria’s persistent security crises and rescuing abducted civilians.
More updates on the situation are expected as the operation continues.
