The Senate has, on Wednesday, directed the Inspector General of Police, Idris Kpotum Ibrahim to restore security aides of Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano.
Obiano had called attention of Nigerians to withdrawal of his security aides ahead of Saturday governorship election in the state.
Senate decision was sequel to a point of order raised by Senator Biodun Olujinmi who said the development Portend bad omen for the country ‘s democracy.
According to her, “the role of IGP in taking over aides of sitting governor is not good for our democracy.
“It means that in 2019 even the Senate President will loose all his security aides.”
Elombah.com had reported earlier that the Inspector-general of police, Ibrahim Idris said the withdrawal of the security aides attached to Governor Obiano was to prevent corrupt tendencies that attends election in the country.
IGP Idris gave the explanation during election stakeholders’ forum organised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Tuesday in Awka.
Obiano had raised alarm that that his ADC had been directed by the police high command to vacate him on Tuesday morning.
He said the development put his life in danger and is unacceptable and unfair to his person and office.
Allaying his fears, the IGP said the withdrawal was a harmless move.
He said: “We do not mean anything bad to Anambra governor on this action; his ADC will be returned to him early Sunday morning after the governorship election on Saturday Nov.18.
“We have equally withdrawn all the policemen attached to political appointees, local government chairmen and others in Anambra till after the election,” he said.
