Breaking: Senate suspends Amendment of CCB/CCT, ACJ Act

The Senate has decided to discontinue with the amendment of Code of Conduct/ Bureau Act and Administration of Criminal Justice Act.

The decision was taken after over two hours closed door session

Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu presided during the plenary.

He also disclosed that the summon Issued to the chairman of Code of Conduct Tribunal, Danladi Umar has been called off.

Justice Umar was asked to appear before Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petition.

Ekweremadu also said that the report of Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions on Senator Kabiru Marafa has been dropped.

Senate also decided to stand with Senate President Saraki in his trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

The Deputy Senate President set-up two from each geo-political zone to resolve all pending issues in the Senate.

Ekweremadu said, “We have decided to suspend the discussion of the committee on Ethics report on Senator Marafa. 

“We also agreed to suspend further deliberation on the amendment on the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act and the Administration of Criminal Justice act the amendment thereto.

“We equally agreed that this senate should stand and we do stand by the senate president in his trial until proven guilty by the court in accordance with our constitution and democratic practices all over the world including South Africa, Brazil and Russia.

“We also agreed to set up a committee two from each geo-political zone to address all the remaining issues and as part of the reconciliation those in court should consider withdrawing the cases.

“Further to the agreement to set up the committees, the geo-political zones have sent names to their representatives. For South-South we have Senator Godswill Akpabio and senator James Manager.

“For North-West we have Senator Ahmed Sani-Yerima and Suleiman Hunkuyi;

“For the North-East, we have Senators Bukar Abba Ibrahim and Joshua Lidani;  

“For the South-East we have Senators Sam Egwu and Hope Uzodinma.

“For the North-Central, we have Senators Barnabas Gemade and Abdullahi Adamu, and,

“For the South-West, we have Senators Monsurat Sunmonu and Gbenga Ashafa.”

Decision, of the Senate to go to closed door was sequel to a point of order raised by Senator Hope Uzodinma who called the attention of the Senate on the issue going on in the public.

Uzodinma said, “I have gotten a lot of calls from my constituents on issues perceived wrongly in this senate and we represent the pol class and we cannot shy away.

“From the order paper, report on the committee on ethics, one of the issues is there.

“I want us to go into a close door session to discuss this issue.”
