Breaking: UN Security Council calls on Jammeh to hand over immediately

The United Nations [UN] Security Council has called on Yaya Jammeh Of Gambia to immediately hand over power to the winner of the Presidential election, Adama Barrow.

Earlier, Elombah.com had reported that the ECOWAS Commission, the African Union Commission and the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) condemned the Gambian incumbent president, Yahya Jammeh.

Jammeh had rejected the results of the Gambian presidential election of 1 December 2016 that have been officially announced by the country’s Electoral Commission. 

ECOWAS, AU and UN response followed the call by the government of Senegal that they summon an emergency security council over the development in Gambia.

The President of the ECOWAS Commission, the Chairperson of the AU Commission and the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General to West Africa and the Sahel expressed deep concerned by these developments. 

They, therefore, called on the government of The Gambia to abide by its constitutional responsibilities and international obligations. 

It is fundamental that the verdict of the ballots should be respected, and that the security of the president -elect Adama Barrow, and that of all Gambian citizen be fully ensured. 

They also called upon the Gambian Defence and Security forces to live up to their republican duties.

The Gambian leader had shocked world when he rejected the result of presidential election held earlier this month, a week after admitting defeat.

Mr Jammeh, who took power in a coup in 1994, cited “abnormalities” in the vote and called for fresh elections in which he was defeated by Adama Barrow.

Mr. Barrow, who won more than 43% of the vote, on the other hand, accused the incumbent of damaging democracy by refusing to accept the result.

According to the electoral commission, the revised results of the vote on 1 December was:

Mr Barrow won 222,708 votes (43.34%)

President Jammeh took 208,487 (39.6%)

A third-party candidate, Mama Kandeh, won 89,768 (17.1%)
