Manchester City suffered another disappointing Premier League defeat after Brighton secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, October 31, with Yasin Ayari’s first-half strike proving decisive.

The result condemned Enzo Maresca’s side to consecutive league defeats following their previous loss to Aston Villa, while Brighton strengthened their impressive position among the Premier League’s leading sides.

Despite dominating significant periods of the encounter, City struggled to convert their opportunities, with Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen producing important interventions to preserve his team’s advantage.

The visitors made a dream start in the 11th minute when Ayari broke the deadlock with a left-footed finish into the bottom-right corner. The midfielder capitalised on a dangerous delivery involving Maxim De Cuyper, who was credited with the assist, to put Brighton ahead and silence the home supporters.

Manchester City immediately attempted to respond, with Josko Gvardiol coming close to an equaliser in the 16th minute. The defender connected with Elliot Anderson’s delivery from a corner but sent his header over the crossbar.

Brighton also threatened to extend their advantage in the 17th minute when Diego Gómez attempted an ambitious effort from distance during a counterattack, although his shot sailed wide.

The visitors’ physical approach resulted in the first booking of the afternoon in the 20th minute, when Chema Andrés received a yellow card for a foul on Ayyoub Bouaddi.

City continued searching for an equaliser, with Iliman Ndiaye missing a headed opportunity from Anderson’s corner in the 22nd minute.

Verbruggen then demonstrated his importance to Brighton in the 25th minute, producing a save to deny Ndiaye’s right-footed effort from inside the penalty area.

Erling Haaland also struggled to find the breakthrough, with Lewis Dunk and the Brighton defence blocking his attempt in the 30th minute after Jérémy Doku delivered a dangerous cutback.

Gómez forced Gianluigi Donnarumma into action in the 34th minute, but the Manchester City goalkeeper prevented Brighton from increasing their advantage.

After the interval, Brighton nearly doubled their lead in the 54th minute when Maxim De Cuyper threatened with a header from inside the penalty area, forcing another save from Donnarumma.

City introduced Rayan Cherki in the 55th minute in an attempt to inject creativity into their attack, but Brighton continued to frustrate the hosts.

The home side came close to equalising in the 62nd minute when Haaland’s efforts were denied by Verbruggen, who produced an important save to keep his side in front.

The pressure continued as Manchester City searched desperately for a goal, but their finishing remained a major problem.

One of the most significant moments came in the 76th minute when Ndiaye struck the right post with an effort from close range, denying City what could have been a crucial equaliser.

Maresca responded with further attacking substitutions, introducing Allan and Phil Foden in the 79th minute as City intensified their search for a late breakthrough.

Brighton, however, remained disciplined defensively, with Pascal Groß receiving a yellow card in the 81st minute after bringing down Allan.

The visitors survived further late pressure, while Manchester City failed to find the decisive finish despite throwing more players forward.

Deep into stoppage time, Nico O’Reilly delivered a dangerous ball across the Brighton goal, but Ndiaye sent his effort wide, summing up City’s frustrating afternoon in front of goal.

The final whistle confirmed a valuable 1-0 victory for Brighton and another damaging result for Manchester City.

For Maresca, the consecutive defeats will raise questions about his team’s recent performances, particularly their inability to turn attacking pressure into goals.

Brighton, meanwhile, will take considerable confidence from their disciplined performance, with Ayari’s early strike proving enough to secure all three points at one of the Premier League’s most difficult grounds.
