Buhari begins aggressive mass metering initiative, to roll out 1m meters

President Muhammadu Buhari has began a free Presidential Mass Metering Initiative across the country.

This was contained in a presidential directive made available to ElombahNews on Wednesday.

According to the initiative, the Presidency will make funding immediately available for DisCos to roll out one million meters in the first phase.

The meters are being provided at no cost to consumers.

The directive signed by President Muhammadu Buhari reads:

“Under the first phase of the Presidential Mass Metering Initiative, we are making funding immediately available for DisCos to roll out 1,000,000 Meters in the first phase, at no cost to consumers.

“Deployment has already started in parts of Kano, Kaduna, Lagos and Abuja.

“Future phases of this Metering Initiative will help us fully meet the 6.5 million deficit of meters nationwide, and will impact an estimated 30 million consumers.

“All meters under this program will be sourced from local manufacturers and in-country stock, to create jobs.

“We are committed to ending estimated billing in all forms in Nigeria, and ensuring that Nigerians pay only for the electricity they consume.”

On its part, AEDC announced on Tuesday, 3rd November, 2020, that it flagged off the National Mass Metering Programme (NMMP).

“The metering programme which was flagged off by the MD/CEO of AEDC Plc, Dr Ernest Mupwaya, was set up by the Federal Government to ease the burden of meter acquisition and ensure closure of the metering gap,” it said.

The former Director General of Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Engr. Tom Adaba, at the occasion, expressed excitement over the mass metering programme initiated by the Government.

He enjoined AEDC to continue to improve its services to her customers through metering and power supply.

Also present at AEDC flag-off of the NMMP was the Secretary-General of the Network of Electricity Consumers Advocacy of Nigeria (NECAN), Mr Uket Ogbonga

He applauded the entire management of AEDC for an impressive job done customers to desist from energy theft and meter bypass.
