Buhari Leaves For Jordan Hours After He Returned From Abidjan

During the EU-AU Summit, President Buhari also met with Chancellor Merkel in Abidjan. He discussed increased cooperation to check the illegal migration of Nigerians to Europe and went as far as askiing Germany to deport illegal Nigerian migrants. He also discussed the progress of war on terrorism in this country, as well as investment opportunities in Nigeria for German companies.
President Muhammadu Buhari will again leave the country today for Alqaba, the Jordanian capital, to participate in a two-day security summit on West Africa.
President Buhari’s departure is coming hours after he returned to the country on Thursday afternoon from his three-day trip to Abidjan, the capital of Côte d’Ivoire, where he participated in the fifth EU-AU Summit.
According to the Special Adviser to the President, Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, Buhari will December 2-3, 2017, join other Heads of State in Aqaba, Jordan.
The Jordanian King, Abdullah II, is hosting the West African security summit because of his concern for security in West African sub-region.
The participants will review strategies in fighting terrorism, and reinforce joint security structures that will be more proactive in preventing attacks.
Tagged, AQABA RETREAT, the meeting, hosted by His Majesty, King Abdullah II of Jordan, is expected to be attended by West African Heads of State, representatives of governments of 48 countries and a number of key Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs).
At the meeting, the President is expected to share Nigeria’s experience on terrorism and its spread across West Africa, with a view to soliciting more support for pre-emptive measures that will neutralise the activities of insurgents in the sub-region.
The Nigerian leader will also hold bilateral meetings with some Heads of State to strengthen relations.
President Buhari and his delegation will attend the official dinner to be hosted by King Abdullah II in honour of visiting Heads of State and their delegations.
The President will be accompanied to Jordan by the governors of Kogi, Osun and Niger States; the Ministers of Defence, Education, Foreign Affairs; the National Security Adviser, and the Acting Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency.
The Jordanian king’s decision to host a security summit for Africa had earlier been disclosed in New York on September 20 this year.
Abdulah had donated military hardware to Nigeria with additional pledge to further supply helicopters to the country to enhance its fight against terrorism during the 72nd session of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The king had handed the donation to the president at the event.
