BUK trains 120 youths on quality leadership skills –Director

The Department of Gender Studies, Bayero University Kano (BUK), has completed training for 120 youths in the State, on quality leadership skills for the youth, the Director of the department, Prof. Hassana Sani-Darma has said.

Sani-Darma said on Monday, in Kano, that the training aimed at bringing together the youth from different areas, especially from universities, other tertiary institutions and even graduates, to come together and discuss issues affecting them.

“The exercise was focused on enhancing their knowledge, mobilizing them to participate in leadership, and also to advise the youth on active participation in politics,” she said.

She added: “the centre has trained youths on de-radicalization, supported by Rosa Luxemburg Foundation, who was always ready to support the centre on such issues, for the development of the society.

Besides training youth on de-radicalization, the centre had also organised a series of roundtable programmes for a better society, according to Sani-Darma.

Also, speaking during the training, Dr Maikano Madaki, of the Sociology department of the university, said the training specifically targeted youths in Nigeria, with a focus on how to develop their leadership skills, identifying areas where they have problems, and the skills needed to address their challenges.

‘’Secondly, it was planned to also look at the effect of drug or substance abuse in the country, and the extent to which it is affecting the socio-economic development of any country where you find large number of youths abusing drugs.

‘’And the essence generally is to create awareness among the target group, who are basically the youth, so that they can go back to their respective locations and NGOs to build their leadership skills, to fight the problem of drug abuse among the youths in the country,’’ Madaki said.

According to him, the nature of the political system in Nigeria had indicated that the leaders had limited opportunities to participate in the politicking, despites becoming leaders, because the system could not provide the appropriate atmosphere for the leaders, who even have the potential, the capacity, the knowledge and experience to serve the nation.

“And the politics, politicking and the political environment are no longer favorable for the youths, being dominated by those that are seen as the wealthiest individuals in the society, who always try to rotate or recycle themselves within the system and positions.” He spoke. (NAN)
