YAMOUSSOUKRO, Côte d’Ivoire — Nigeria’s Flying Eagles suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Burkina Faso in the final of the 2026 WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship on Sunday, surrendering the regional title to the Young Stallions at the Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro.
The defending champions endured a difficult opening half as Burkina Faso produced an aggressive and clinical performance to establish a commanding 3-0 lead before the interval. Nigeria struggled to contain the pace and direct attacking approach of their opponents, with gaps in the defence repeatedly exposed.
Burkina Faso’s early dominance effectively put the Flying Eagles on the back foot, leaving Nigeria with a major deficit to overturn in the second half. The Burkinabe side maintained pressure and took advantage of defensive mistakes to score three times before the break.
Nigeria returned from the interval with greater urgency and managed to reduce the deficit through forward Muiz Adeleke, who converted a penalty to make the score 3-1.
The goal briefly revived Nigeria’s hopes of mounting a comeback, with Abdu Maikaba’s team pushing higher up the pitch and creating opportunities. However, Burkina Faso remained organised and compact, making it difficult for the Flying Eagles to break through.
As Nigeria continued to search for a way back into the contest, Burkina Faso eventually added a fourth goal late in the match to put the result beyond doubt and complete a convincing victory.
The defeat marked another setback for the Flying Eagles against the Young Stallions, who had already defeated Nigeria earlier in the tournament during the group stage.
Burkina Faso’s victory earned them the WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship title and confirmed their dominance over Nigeria in the regional competition.
The Young Stallions will now join hosts Ghana as the representatives of the WAFU B zone at next year’s Africa U-20 Cup of Nations.
For Nigeria, the result brings the tournament campaign to an abrupt end and leaves the defending champions without the regional trophy they won previously.
The heavy defeat is also expected to prompt reflection within the Nigerian camp, particularly on defensive organisation and the team’s response to early setbacks as preparations continue for future international youth competitions.
