Burna Boy’s ₦250m School Project Sparks Debate

Grammy-winning singer Burna Boy has attracted attention after reportedly funding a school and clinic project valued at more than ₦250 million in his hometown community of Odiokwu, Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The project came into the spotlight after social media activist VeryDarkMan, popularly known as VDM, shared a video tour of the facilities, showcasing classroom blocks, a clinic, an administrative building and other infrastructure intended to serve residents of the community. The construction was handled by Fego Works Limited, with VDM overseeing the initiative.

According to details shared by VDM, the development includes separate classroom blocks for junior and senior secondary school students, toilets, fans and a perimeter fence covering more than 3.4 hectares of land. He also disclosed that more than 18,000 blocks were used for the perimeter fence alone.

The compound features six murals depicting Burna Boy, children and members of the team associated with the project. VDM has defended the artwork, saying it celebrates the singer’s contribution and could inspire children by showing them that someone from their community has achieved international success.

However, the reported ₦250 million cost has generated mixed reactions online, with some Nigerians praising Burna Boy for investing in education and healthcare, while others have questioned whether the finished structures and facilities justify the amount spent.

One of the most discussed aspects has been the reported ₦50 million cost of the murals. VDM previously shared details of the artwork, prompting debate over whether such a large amount should have been allocated to decoration within a school environment.

Criticism has also focused on the apparent absence of a library and science laboratory in photographs and videos circulating online. Some commenters have argued that these facilities are important for secondary school students, particularly those studying science-related subjects.

Questions have further been raised about the purchase of blocks rather than moulding them locally, as well as the need for a detailed breakdown of expenditure. These concerns remain part of the public debate; the available reports do not provide an independently audited account of the project’s total cost or establish that the reported expenditure was improper.

Supporters, meanwhile, have commended Burna Boy for directing resources towards a community project that could improve access to education and basic healthcare. The clinic is particularly significant because its long-term value will depend on the availability of medical equipment, healthcare workers, supplies and sustainable operating funds.

The project also raises a broader question about what happens after the construction of community facilities. A school requires teachers, learning materials and regular maintenance, while a functioning clinic needs trained personnel and consistent funding. Details about the arrangements for staffing, management and maintenance have not been fully established in the reports reviewed.

The development was scheduled for commissioning on October 10, 2026, with a football match between teams representing Ahoada West and Ahoada East also planned as part of the activities. VDM has additionally discussed plans for a statue honouring Burna Boy.

Burna Boy’s reported investment has therefore become more than a story about celebrity generosity. It has opened a debate about transparency, priorities in school construction and the responsibilities involved in maintaining community infrastructure.

While the project has drawn praise for its potential contribution to Odiokwu, questions over the reported expenditure and the provision of additional educational facilities are likely to remain until more detailed information becomes available. Ultimately, the project’s lasting success will be measured not only by the buildings constructed but by the quality of education and healthcare they deliver to the people they are intended to serve.
