Bus Crash Kills 25 Mourners Returning from Funeral

At least 25 people have been killed in a Kenya bus crash after a vehicle carrying mourners from a funeral overturned and plunged into a ditch in southwestern Kenya, police have confirmed.
Diaspora Digital Media gathered that the crash happened on Friday, August 8, in Kisumu County, along a stretch of road known for frequent accidents.
The bus was travelling from Kakamega town to Kisumu when the driver reportedly lost control while approaching a roundabout at high speed.
“The vehicle lost control, veered, and rolled onto the other side of the road,” said Peter Maina, the regional traffic enforcement officer for Nyanza province.
He said the victims included 10 women, a 10-year-old girl, and 10 men.
Twenty-nine passengers were initially reported injured, but four later died in hospital, bringing the death toll to 25, according to Fredrick Ouma Oluga, Kenya’s principal secretary for medical services.
Local media described the site of the Kenya bus crash as a blackspot where collisions are common.
Police have launched an investigation into the cause, with speeding cited as a likely factor.
Calls for Better Road Safety
The tragedy has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of traffic laws, better driver training, and urgent repairs to dangerous road sections.
Road safety is a persistent problem in Kenya, where many highways are narrow, poorly maintained, and riddled with potholes.
The Kisumu crash came during a week of multiple fatal transport incidents.
On Thursday, an air ambulance crashed into a residential area near Nairobi, killing six people. That same day, a train collided with a bus, leaving eight dead.
In another incident on Thursday, nine workers died in Naivasha, Nakuru County, when a bus carrying 32 people collided at a railway crossing.
Deadly Pattern on Kenyan Roads
Authorities say speeding, reckless driving, and mechanical faults are the leading causes of accidents in the country.
The National Transport and Safety Authority has urged motorists to be cautious, especially during the rainy season, when wet roads and poor visibility increase risks.
For the families of the Kisumu crash victims, the warnings come too late.
The mourners had been returning from burying a loved one.
By the end of the day, their grief had deepened and more funerals will now follow.
