The spokesman of President Bola Tinubu, Chief Bayo Onanuga, on Monday, took a swipe at opposition figures following the poor performance of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the just concluded by-elections.
Onanuga posted a picture on X featuring key opposition leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, with the caption: “How is the market now?”.
The post is widely interpreted as a jab at the opposition’s waning influence in Nigeria’s political arena.
The by-elections, held across 16 constituencies in 12 states, were seen as a test of the ADC’s popularity, especially with backing from high-profile figures like Atiku and Obi.
Despite their coalition’s ambitions to challenge President Tinubu in 2027, the ADC failed to secure a single seat.
Meanwhile, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) dominated the elections, winning 12 constituencies.
Other opposition parties, such as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), managed to claim a few victories, but the ADC’s poor showing has raised questions about its viability as a contender in future elections.
