The Confederation of African Football has officially confirmed that the qualifying draw for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will be staged on Tuesday in Cairo, Egypt, signaling the formal commencement of the race to one of the continent’s most prestigious football competitions.

The draw will determine the group stage structure for the qualification series involving 48 national teams across Africa. These teams will compete for places at the final tournament scheduled to be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda between June 19 and July 17, 2027.

According to CAF, the ceremony will take place at the headquarters of the Egyptian Football Association in Cairo. The event is expected to attract representatives of national football associations, coaches, team officials, and media professionals from across the continent, all gathering to witness the unveiling of the qualification pathway.

CAF stated that the 48 participating nations will be divided into 12 groups, each containing four teams. At the conclusion of the group stage matches, the top two teams from each group will earn automatic qualification to the final tournament. This structure is designed to ensure a highly competitive qualification process that maintains interest across all regions of African football.

CAF described the upcoming edition of the tournament as a historic milestone for African football, noting that it will be the first time the Africa Cup of Nations is jointly hosted by three countries. The tournament has been branded AFCON PAMOJA 2027, with the Swahili word Pamoja meaning together. The name reflects unity and cooperation among the East African host nations.

Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda are already intensifying preparations for the tournament. The three countries are expected to invest heavily in stadium upgrades, training facilities, transport systems, accommodation infrastructure, and security arrangements. CAF has expressed confidence that the East African region will deliver a successful tournament that meets global standards.

The Africa Cup of Nations remains the most significant football competition in Africa and one of the most widely followed sporting events in the world. The 2027 edition is expected to generate global attention due to its expanded format and unique tri nation hosting arrangement. Football stakeholders believe the tournament will enhance visibility for African football and provide opportunities for emerging nations to compete at a higher level.

The qualifying draw in Cairo will be the first major step in shaping the competitive landscape of the tournament.
