Fear and anxiety among commuters in Lagos received a temporary relief after operatives of the Lagos State Police Command arrested six suspected members of a notorious “one chance” robbery syndicate allegedly operating around Ago Palace Way in the Okota area of the state.

The suspects were apprehended during a coordinated stop and search operation carried out by police officers monitoring criminal activities along the busy Lagos corridor. Authorities also recovered a tricycle suspected to have been used for robbery operations, a fake firearm, a cutlass, and other incriminating items linked to the gang.

The development was confirmed in an official statement issued by the spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, who explained that the arrest formed part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to curb rising cases of robbery and violent crimes targeting unsuspecting commuters in different parts of Lagos State.

According to the police, the suspects were intercepted while moving in a commercial tricycle with registration number AAA 720 QL. Officers attached to the patrol team reportedly became suspicious of the occupants during routine surveillance activities around Ago Palace Way, an area that has witnessed repeated complaints of “one chance” robberies in recent months.

Police sources disclosed that immediately the suspects noticed the presence of security operatives, they allegedly abandoned the tricycle and attempted to escape in different directions. The officers, however, acted swiftly and successfully arrested six members of the gang after a brief pursuit around the area.

Items recovered during the operation included a cutlass allegedly used to threaten victims, a fake gun believed to have been deployed during previous robbery attacks, and a mobile phone suspected to belong to one of their victims. Investigators also impounded the tricycle allegedly used by the syndicate to lure passengers before dispossessing them of valuables.

The police said preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects specialised in disguising themselves as commercial transport operators and passengers before trapping unsuspecting commuters inside the tricycle. Victims were reportedly robbed of cash, mobile phones, ATM cards, jewellery, and other personal belongings, often under threats and intimidation.

“One chance” robbery has become one of the most alarming urban crimes in Nigeria, particularly in Lagos and Abuja, where criminals exploit the desperation of commuters searching for transportation. In many cases, victims unknowingly board vehicles occupied by members of robbery gangs pretending to be genuine passengers or drivers.

Security experts have repeatedly warned residents to remain vigilant while boarding public transport, especially during late hours or in isolated locations. Many commuters have shared disturbing experiences involving physical assault, intimidation, and financial extortion after falling victim to such criminal operations.

Residents around Okota and Ago Palace Way have also expressed concerns over the increasing activities of suspected criminal gangs operating with tricycles and commercial vehicles. Some residents say criminals often target workers returning home late at night, students, and unsuspecting visitors unfamiliar with transport routes in the area.

Following the latest arrest, the Lagos State Police Command reassured residents of its determination to sustain aggressive policing strategies aimed at restoring public confidence and improving safety across the state. Authorities noted that intelligence gathering, surveillance patrols, and stop and search operations have continued to play vital roles in disrupting criminal networks.

The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, CP Olohundare Jimoh, reportedly commended the officers involved in the operation and reiterated the command’s commitment to tackling all forms of organised crime. He urged residents to support law enforcement agencies by providing timely and credible information capable of assisting security investigations.

Police authorities further advised commuters to avoid boarding suspicious vehicles and to remain cautious whenever they notice unusual behaviour from drivers or passengers. Residents were encouraged to use trusted transport services and share trip details with family members or friends whenever necessary.

Security analysts believe the arrest reflects the growing pressure on law enforcement agencies to address insecurity within urban transport systems. Experts say the increasing use of intelligence-led operations and surveillance patrols could significantly reduce incidents of robbery and improve commuter safety if consistently implemented.

Meanwhile, investigations into the case are ongoing as police authorities intensify efforts to identify and arrest other fleeing members of the syndicate. The six arrested suspects are expected to face prosecution upon the completion of investigations.

The latest operation has once again highlighted the persistent threat posed by “one chance” gangs and the urgent need for stronger collaboration between security agencies, transport operators, and residents to protect commuters across Nigeria’s major cities.
