Military Airstrikes Kill Over 70 Bandits In Niger, Zamfara

ABUJA, NIGERIA — Nigerian military air operations have reportedly neutralised more than 70 armed bandits during coordinated airstrikes conducted across Niger and Zamfara States, according to security updates from defence authorities.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) confirmed that the strikes were carried out as part of ongoing counterterrorism and anti-banditry operations targeting criminal strongholds in the North-West region.

Military sources stated that the operations were based on intelligence reports tracking the movement and hideouts of armed groups responsible for repeated attacks on rural communities.

The DHQ also dismissed reports alleging civilian casualties, insisting that the airstrikes were precisely targeted at identified terrorist enclaves.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the air operations form part of intensified efforts by the Nigerian Armed Forces to degrade criminal networks operating across forested and remote areas in the affected states.

Security analysts say banditry has remained one of the most persistent security challenges in parts of northern Nigeria, leading to repeated military interventions over the years.

Authorities maintain that airstrikes are often combined with ground operations to disrupt logistics, dismantle camps, and prevent regrouping of armed gangs.

Military officials reportedly emphasized that the latest operation achieved significant success in weakening the operational capacity of the targeted groups.

Residents in affected areas have previously reported increased military activity as part of ongoing clearance operations aimed at restoring security.

Experts note that while such operations may deliver short-term tactical gains, long-term stability depends on sustained intelligence, ground presence, and community engagement.

The Nigerian military has continued to reassure citizens that efforts are ongoing to eliminate armed groups responsible for attacks, kidnappings, and rural insecurity.

Security commentators also highlight the importance of addressing underlying factors such as poverty, illegal arms flow, and ungoverned spaces that enable criminal activity.

The latest airstrikes are among several recent operations conducted across the North-West, where security forces have intensified pressure on bandit networks.

Officials say coordination between air and ground forces remains central to the strategy of containing and degrading armed criminal groups.

Attention now turns to follow-up operations as the military continues efforts to consolidate gains and prevent resurgence of armed bandit activity in the region.
