Confederation of African Football (CAF) has formally removed the second-leg fixture between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Libya’s national team from the ongoing 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers originally slated today.
The decision comes after the Nigeria contingent spent over 13 hours stranded at Al-Abraq Airport after being denied entry into the country.
The team had traveled to Libya, preparing for the return leg of the qualifier following their victory over Libya in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on Friday.
Despite prior clearance to land in Benghazi, Libyan authorities barred the team from entering, locking the airport gates and leaving the players without access to food, water, or communication
Frustrated by the logistical setbacks and the absence of Libyan Football Federation officials to assist, the Super Eagles decided to boycott the match and return home.
Meanwhile, in light of these events, CAF has announced an investigation into the situation. The Libyan Football Federation has claimed sabotage and is threatened legal action against Nigeria in response to the incident.
As the investigation unfolds, CAF has updated its schedule for Tuesday’s matches, notably excluding the Libya-Nigeria fixture from the list.
