Cameroonian govt deploys 2,000 gun boats against separatist fighters

Authorities in Bakassi Peninsula have deployed approximately 2,000 gun-boats across the subdivisions of Isangele Subdivision, Idabato Subdivision and Kumbo Abedimo Subdivision in a bid to prevent pro-separatist fighters from retaking key territory near the border.

The deployment comes amid reports that separatist forces currently hold the village of Akpankanya and may attempt a push toward the administrative centre.

Security analysts believe the heavy boat build-up is meant to block riverine or coastal advances and reinforce government presence.

According to local sources, the gun-boats were supplied by the French Army, which has reportedly been training Cameroon’s rapid-intervention battalions since last year.

Government sources say the separatists holding Akpankanya will likely face “heavy resistance” if they attempt any further incursion into government-held administrative quarters.

At present, no casualties have been publicly reported.
