Canada joins momentum to recognize Palestinian state by September
DDM News

(DDM) – Canada has officially announced plans to recognize the State of Palestine during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the decision was confirmed on Wednesday by Prime Minister Mark Carney, alongside Foreign Minister Anita Anand, during a press briefing in Ottawa.
Carney reaffirmed Canada’s longstanding support for a two-state solution in the Middle East, emphasizing the importance of peaceful coexistence between an independent Palestinian state and the State of Israel.
“Canada has long been committed to a two-state solution, an independent, viable and sovereign Palestinian state living side by side with Israel in peace and security,” Carney stated.
The Canadian government’s move comes amid growing international momentum following similar announcements from France and the United Kingdom.
France has declared its intent to recognize Palestine in September, while the UK has said it will follow suit if Israel fails to agree to key conditions, including a ceasefire in Gaza.
Carney noted that the decision to proceed with recognition is tied to assurances received from Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
According to the Canadian Prime Minister, Abbas has committed to much-needed reforms, including holding the long-overdue Palestinian elections in 2026.
Carney emphasized that Hamas will not participate in those elections and that Abbas has promised the future Palestinian state will not be militarized.
“(Abbas) has also committed to not militarizing the state of Palestine,” Carney added.
Canada’s position maintains that while it supports Israel’s right to exist and defend itself, lasting peace is only achievable if Palestinians are given a sovereign and peaceful state of their own.
“Canada will always steadfastly support Israel’s existence as an independent state in the Middle East, living in peace and security,” Carney affirmed.
He stressed that peace for Israel cannot be sustained without a stable Palestinian neighbor that also respects Israel’s right to security.
This announcement comes as humanitarian concerns escalate in Gaza, where Israel’s blockade has exacerbated a worsening hunger crisis.
The international community continues to push for a ceasefire and increased aid access, with Canada positioning itself as a mediator advocating for a balanced approach.
Foreign Minister Anita Anand reiterated that Canada will engage diplomatically to ensure the Palestinian Authority delivers on its commitments.
Analysts believe Canada’s endorsement of Palestinian statehood could influence other Western nations to reconsider their positions ahead of the UN assembly.
The recognition, if finalized in September, would mark a significant diplomatic milestone and signal a shift in Canada’s role on the global stage regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
