“The stolen van was part of the deputy governor’s convoy,” one insider confirmed, adding that the vehicle was parked close to the deputy governor’s office complex at the time of the incident.

Another Government House source revealed that the deputy governor’s office area is usually only patrolled during working hours or when he is physically present in the building  a lapse that may have aided the thief’s successful operation.

The driver of the stolen Hilux, identified as Shafiu Sharp-Sharp, has reportedly been interrogated and briefly detained as part of an ongoing investigation.

“An investigation has been launched. The driver is being quizzed, while the Chief Security Officer is analysing the CCTV footage,” a source disclosed.

The insider added that details and descriptions of the stolen vehicle have been circulated to security operatives across the state to facilitate its recovery and apprehend the suspect.

Efforts to reach Governor Abba Yusuf’s spokesman, Sanusi Dawakin Tofa, were unsuccessful as he did not respond to calls or messages sent by journalists as of press time.
