What began with insults, confrontations and social media-fuelled rivalry eventually had to be settled with gloves on as Phyna and Carter Efe emerged victorious from two of the biggest celebrity bouts at Balmoral Promotions’ Chaos in the Ring event in Lagos.

The Independence Day boxing spectacle took place on Thursday, October 1, at the Balmoral Hall, Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, bringing together entertainment personalities and professional boxers for a night that combined celebrity rivalries with competitive boxing.

Reality TV star Josephina Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, delivered one of the night’s headline moments when she stopped actress Nkechi Blessing Sunday in their scheduled four-round celebrity contest.

The bout had attracted considerable attention before either woman entered the ring because of their increasingly heated exchanges during the build-up. Their confrontation at the pre-fight press conference had made it clear that the contest was about more than putting on a show for the audience.

Once the bell rang, however, the rivalry moved from verbal exchanges to physical competition.

Phyna eventually dropped Nkechi Blessing in the fourth round, bringing the contest to an end and securing a knockout victory. The result made Phyna the winner of what was described as Nigeria’s first female celebrity boxing bout.

Rather than spending much time celebrating, Phyna immediately introduced another potential storyline. After the fight, she called out Nollywood actress Etinosa Idemudia, alleging that the actress had repeatedly contacted her through direct messages and challenging her to settle their differences inside the ring.

Etinosa, who was present at the event, accepted the challenge, creating the possibility of another celebrity boxing encounter.

Carter Efe had earlier secured his own victory, overcoming rapper Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington, in their four-round celebrity contest.

Unlike Phyna’s stoppage victory, Carter Efe’s fight went the distance, with the content creator winning by unanimous decision.

The victory was significant for Oderhohwo Joseph Efe, better known as Carter Efe, because it allowed him to retain the celebrity boxing title he had claimed after defeating singer Habeeb Badmus, popularly known as Portable, earlier in the year.

The rivalry with Speed Darlington had also been one of the major attractions of the event. Their confrontation before the fight had already generated widespread attention after a birthday celebration for Carter Efe turned into another flashpoint.

During the press conference, Speed Darlington kicked Carter Efe’s birthday cake to the ground, further escalating tensions between the two men. Security personnel had to intervene as the atmosphere became increasingly hostile.

The pre-fight drama did not end there.

Phyna and Nkechi Blessing also exchanged heated words at the press conference, while the event was briefly disrupted after firecrackers associated with Carter Efe’s entourage sparked a small fire inside the venue. The flames were quickly extinguished, preventing the incident from causing further disruption.

By fight night, the attention shifted back to the ring, where Carter Efe and Phyna both completed the jobs they had been preparing for.

The celebrity contests were only part of a broader card that also featured professional boxing.

The main event saw Ghanaian boxer Seth “Freezy Macbones” Gyimah challenge Nigeria’s Godday “Zodsolo” Appah for the WBO African Light Heavyweight Continental Championship.

Gyimah defeated Appah to claim the title, adding a professional championship result to an evening already dominated by celebrity boxing and entertainment.

The event had been carefully built around the personalities involved, but the tension surrounding the card was not limited to promotional theatrics. The pre-fight confrontations, particularly those involving Carter Efe and Speed Darlington as well as Phyna and Nkechi Blessing, created strong public interest before the competitors stepped between the ropes.

For Phyna, the night ended with a stoppage victory and a new potential rivalry with Etinosa Idemudia.

For Carter Efe, the unanimous decision over Speed Darlington extended his run in the celebrity boxing series and preserved his title following his earlier victory over Portable.

The results gave the Independence Day event a clear sporting conclusion after days of drama surrounding the personalities involved.

In the end, Phyna supplied the knockout, Carter Efe claimed the judges’ decision and Freezy Macbones captured the professional championship. The combination of celebrity rivalries, competitive boxing and a dramatic build-up ensured that Chaos in the Ring delivered an evening where much of the entertainment began long before the first bell.
