Veteran entertainer Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charleyboy, has criticized Senator Orji Uzor Kalu over a controversial outfit.

The senator from Abia North wore attire to the Senate bearing the inscription “Tinubu for President 2027” during plenary, Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathers.

The move immediately drew public attention and ignited debates on social media and among political observers.

Many Nigerians viewed the outfit as premature and insensitive, considering the country’s current challenges and political climate.

Charleyboy expressed outrage on Instagram, slamming the senator for what he described as shameless sycophancy.

In his words, “See dis clown. Some of these my yeye useless Igbo brothers have taken sycophancy to another level.”

He added, “It is a Tufiakwa situation. Dia Fathers. Criminals everywhere. Can someone please answer me?”

His post sparked wide reactions, with many agreeing that the senator’s display was unnecessary and inappropriate.

Charleyboy is known for speaking truth to power and often criticizes political figures who ignore the people’s struggles.

His comments reflect growing dissatisfaction among Nigerians with politicians who prioritize loyalty over accountability.

Some critics argue that Senator Kalu’s outfit undermines the South-East’s political aspirations for national leadership.

They believe it sends the wrong message, especially amid calls for inclusiveness and equity in Nigerian politics.

Others see the senator’s action as political self-interest rather than genuine support for national development.

Supporters of Senator Kalu, however, defend his choice, citing his right to free political expression and party loyalty.

They argue he’s a senior APC member, and endorsing President Tinubu is within his political rights.

To them, the outfit symbolizes party solidarity and not necessarily blind allegiance or betrayal of regional interests.

Nevertheless, many believe the National Assembly is not the place for such overt political endorsements.

Critics say it diminishes the seriousness of parliamentary proceedings and reduces governance to political theatre.

Charleyboy’s reaction has reignited debate over how public officials balance national duty with personal political affiliations.

He remains a strong advocate for political accountability and believes leaders must focus more on people than politics.

His remarks also touch on ethnic identity, given his reference to “yeye useless Igbo brothers” in his criticism.

This adds another layer to the discussion, especially regarding internal disagreements within Nigeria’s ethnic and political groups.

As economic hardship, insecurity, and frustration grow, many Nigerians want leaders to prioritize governance over campaigns.

The pushback against Senator Kalu’s attire reflects a broader demand for sincerity and responsibility from public office holders.

For now, the senator has not responded publicly to Charleyboy’s harsh rebuke or the social media backlash.

However, the incident continues to trend, reflecting widespread discontent with how some politicians use their platforms.

Whether this leads to introspection among leaders or fades as another controversy remains to be seen.

What’s certain is that public patience with political theatrics is running out fast across many parts of the country.
