(DDM) – Veteran entertainer and activist, Charles Chukwuemeka Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has revealed his hilarious reaction after Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Mr. Peter Obi, visited him at home with a “Ghana Must Go” bag filled not with money, but with fruits, kola nuts, and roasted groundnuts.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that Charly Boy shared the encounter in a social media post, explaining that Obi had called him around 1 a.m. to announce an early morning visit. According to him, the former Anambra governor specifically asked if arriving between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. would be convenient.
Charly Boy, who is widely respected for his decades-long music and activism career, admitted he initially grumbled about losing his morning exercise and scooter routine. However, he said he quickly agreed to the meeting, adding that he would do anything for Peter Obi, whom he described as a friend and patriot.
Obi reportedly arrived at 5:45 a.m., and the two men spent over two hours discussing Nigeria’s political climate, family issues, and the state of the nation.During the visit, Charly Boy noticed a large Ghana Must Go bag at the entrance of his living room but chose not to check its content immediately.
It was only after Obi prepared to leave that he told Charly Boy he had “brought something small.” Out of courtesy, the entertainer said he thanked him without opening the bag.
But when he eventually unzipped it, he fell to the ground in laughter.
Inside the bag, he found no cash or luxury items, but rather three bottles of roasted groundnuts, kola nuts, alligator pepper, oranges, pawpaw, mangoes, bananas, “agara” (local snack), and other fruits, all handpicked by Obi himself.
In his narration, Charly Boy disclosed that he immediately called Obi to express gratitude.
According to him, Obi responded that he does not give out money, but preferred to gift the natural items he personally selected.
The incident, though lighthearted, has attracted attention online, with many Nigerians highlighting Obi’s simplicity, frugality, and down-to-earth personality.
Supporters described the gesture as consistent with Obi’s reputation as a politician who avoids flamboyance and waste.
Charly Boy, often called “Area Fada” by fans, has been a long-time critic of corrupt leadership and has aligned himself with reformist voices in Nigerian politics.
His relationship with Obi reflects his continued interest in supporting political figures who project transparency and humility.
Observers say the episode adds another chapter to Obi’s image as a man who embraces modest living despite his national profile, a contrast to the ostentatious lifestyle associated with many Nigerian politicians.
