Chelsea maintained their perfect start to the 2026/27 Premier League season after surviving a dramatic second-half fightback from Brighton to secure a thrilling 4-3 victory at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Xabi Alonso’s side produced a blistering attacking display in the opening 32 minutes, racing into a 3-0 lead before Brighton fought their way back into the contest. Cole Palmer eventually restored Chelsea’s two-goal advantage in the second half, but Pascal Groß’s stoppage-time strike ensured a nervy finish before the final whistle.

Chelsea lined up in Alonso’s preferred 3-4-3/3-4-2-1 structure, with Levi Colwill, Maxence Lacroix and Wesley Fofana forming the defensive trio, while Pedro Neto and Jorrel Hato operated from the wide areas. Palmer and Morgan Rogers supported former Brighton forward João Pedro in attack.

The hosts needed only four minutes to break the deadlock. Brighton failed to deal with a dangerous situation inside their penalty area, and after João Pedro’s header was blocked on the line, Roméo Lavia reacted quickest to poke the loose ball into the net from close range.

Chelsea doubled their advantage just 10 minutes later. Morgan Rogers drove into the penalty area before pulling the ball back into a dangerous position, allowing Pedro Neto to arrive and fire beyond Bart Verbruggen. The goal, scored in the 14th minute, underlined Chelsea’s aggressive approach and the effectiveness of their quick attacking transitions.

Brighton struggled to contain Chelsea’s movement, with Palmer, Rogers and João Pedro constantly finding spaces between the lines. The visitors attempted to respond, but Chelsea continued to threaten whenever they moved forward.

The third goal arrived in the 32nd minute. Jorrel Hato delivered the assist after Chelsea worked the ball forward, and João Pedro finished the move to make it 3-0 against his former club. The Brazilian’s celebration was understandably muted, but Chelsea looked firmly in control.

However, Brighton refused to collapse. Just three minutes later, Malick Yalcouyé gave the visitors hope with a goal that reduced the deficit to 3-1. Suddenly, the mood around Stamford Bridge changed as Brighton began to find more space and Chelsea’s defensive structure started to look vulnerable.

The second half became increasingly tense. Chelsea had opportunities to put the game beyond Brighton, but the visitors remained dangerous and were rewarded again in the 63rd minute when João Pedro inadvertently turned the ball into his own net. The former Brighton player had now scored at both ends, transforming a seemingly comfortable Chelsea victory into a one-goal game.

Alonso responded with changes as Chelsea attempted to regain control. Reece James and Moisés Caicedo were introduced, while Pedro Neto and Lavia were withdrawn. Caicedo’s return, however, was short-lived, as he was forced off after only around 10 minutes on the pitch, adding another concern to an already eventful afternoon.

With Brighton pushing for an equaliser, Chelsea finally produced the moment of quality they needed. In the 74th minute, João Pedro turned provider, setting up Cole Palmer, who cut inside and delivered a superb finish to restore Chelsea’s two-goal cushion at 4-2.

The goal appeared to settle Chelsea’s nerves, but Brighton continued to press until the very end. Five minutes of additional time were signalled, and the visitors took advantage of the extended period when Pascal Groß scored in the sixth minute of stoppage time to make it 4-3.

Chelsea were forced to defend desperately during the final moments, with Brighton pushing numbers forward in search of an extraordinary equaliser. The Blues eventually held firm, however, securing a second consecutive Premier League victory and maintaining Alonso’s 100 per cent league record.

The result also highlighted both sides of Alonso’s developing Chelsea team. In attack, the Blues looked dangerous and dynamic, scoring four goals through Lavia, Neto, João Pedro and Palmer. Palmer, in particular, once again showed why he remains central to Chelsea’s attacking ambitions.

Defensively, however, Chelsea still have work to do. Conceding three goals after establishing a 3-0 lead exposed vulnerabilities that stronger opponents could punish. Emiliano Martínez, making his Chelsea debut following his move from Aston Villa, made important interventions but could not prevent Brighton from finding the net three times.

Chelsea now have six points from their opening two league matches, following their 3-2 victory over Fulham on the opening weekend. Their exciting attacking football has already provided plenty of entertainment, but Alonso will know that greater defensive control is required if the Blues are to sustain their ambitions throughout the season.

For Brighton, the defeat will be frustrating after their remarkable recovery from three goals down. Fabian Hürzeler’s team showed character and attacking resilience, but Chelsea’s early burst ultimately proved decisive.

At Stamford Bridge, the final whistle brought relief rather than complete satisfaction for the home supporters. Chelsea had won 4-3, but Brighton had made sure Alonso and his players were reminded that there is still plenty to improve despite another spectacular three points.
