JOS, PLATEAU STATE — Christian leaders in Plateau State have expressed deep concern over a series of attacks on churches and communities in parts of Northern Nigeria, calling on the government and security agencies to take urgent and decisive action to stop the violence.
The leaders said the recurring incidents have created fear among worshippers and disrupted religious activities, particularly in rural communities where churches have reportedly been targeted during periods of heightened insecurity.
They noted that the attacks have resulted in loss of lives, displacement of residents, and destruction of places of worship, describing the situation as unacceptable and requiring immediate intervention from relevant authorities.
The religious leaders urged the Federal Government to strengthen security deployment in affected areas and ensure that perpetrators of violence are identified, arrested, and prosecuted. They also called for improved intelligence gathering and early warning systems to prevent further attacks.
According to them, freedom of worship and the right to safety are fundamental rights that must be protected under all circumstances, stressing that continued insecurity threatens social harmony and national unity.
They further appealed for increased collaboration between security agencies, community leaders, and religious institutions in addressing insecurity and promoting peaceful coexistence among different groups.
Security analysts say repeated attacks on religious sites often have broader implications for community stability, as they can deepen mistrust and heighten tensions between affected populations. They emphasize the need for sustained government engagement and preventive security strategies.
The leaders also called for humanitarian support for victims of the attacks, including displaced families and communities affected by violence, urging both government and non-governmental organisations to provide relief materials and rehabilitation assistance.
