Christians Fear Rising As Bandits Storm Kogi Church, Abduct Pastor’s Wife, Members

(DDM) – Suspected bandits on Sunday attacked a church in Ejiba community, Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, abducting the pastor, his wife, and several worshippers during morning service.

Local witnesses said the assailants stormed the newly established Cherubim and Seraphim Church while congregants were gathered in worship.

Congregants reportedly fled in panic as gunfire erupted and the attackers whisked away the victims, including the pastor, known locally as “Orlando”, his wife and several others.

At the time of the report, the exact number of abductees remained undetermined as account details varied and the security agencies had not yet released an official breakdown.

The Kogi State Government confirmed the attack and said a manhunt is underway to secure the release of the victims.

Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, described the attack as “sad and unfortunate,” urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements as security agencies intensify patrols and surveillance.

The incident has sparked fear across Ejiba and surrounding communities, with many residents staying indoors and avoiding public gatherings, especially worship services in remote or poorly secured areas.

This attack follows other recent abductions and attacks on religious gatherings in neighbouring states, underlining a broader trend of rising insecurity threatening places of worship across central and northern Nigeria.

Security analysts say the choice of a church, a place many consider sacrosanct, as a target highlights a disturbing boldness by criminals and a growing crisis that demands a robust, intelligence‑led response.

The Kogi State government’s swift condemnation and rescue pledge may reassure some, but for now many worshippers remain afraid, uncertain whether they can safely gather for service until security is firmly restored.
