Bayelsa State’s sports delegation has set out for Ogun State to compete in the 22nd National Sports Festival, carrying the hopes of their homeland with determination and pride.

The contingent, led by the Director of Sports at the Bayelsa State Sports Council, Sir Braveman Wodi, departed Yenagoa on Friday amidst words of encouragement from the state’s Sports Commissioner, Honourable Daniel Igali.

A celebrated Nigerian sports icon and Commonwealth wrestling champion, Igali used the occasion to remind the athletes of the state’s unwavering support.

“You’re carrying the hopes and aspirations of Bayelsa,” Igali told them.

“Although some of you may be new to this level of competition, this festival is an excellent platform to showcase your talents and make Bayelsa proud.”

Igali passionately urged the team to build on Bayelsa’s impressive track record in youth sports, noting that the state has historically been a formidable force in Nigeria’s sporting arena.

Bayelsa is renowned for its thriving youth sports programs that have produced top athletes, including weightlifting champions and emerging stars in various disciplines.

The commissioner expressed optimism about the team’s prospects, referencing Bayelsa’s strong finish as second overall at the last Nigerian Olympic Games edition held in Asaba in 2022.

“Your performance in Ogun will be a testament to the hard work and the talent we are nurturing in Bayelsa,” Igali said.

“The governor is confident that you can excel and bring glory back home.”

He also reminded the athletes to serve as good ambassadors of their state, emphasizing that Bayelsa has become a household name in Nigeria’s sports industry.

“Stay focused, stay safe, and let’s aim to make Bayelsa Nigeria’s best,” Igali concluded.

With the combined support of their state and the inspiration of champions like Igali, the Bayelsa athletes are poised to make a significant impact in Ogun and beyond.
