The Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM) has formally inaugurated 3,480 ward executives across Anambra State in a sweeping grassroots mobilisation drive aimed at deepening democratic participation ahead of key elections.

The ceremony, held over the weekend near Nkwo Triangle in Nnewi North Local Government Area, doubled as a statewide rally celebrating grassroots political engagement. Leaders, stakeholders, and democracy advocates from the state’s 21 LGAs gathered to witness the historic rollout of COPDEM’s local leadership structure.

Speaking at the event, COPDEM’s Head of Mobilisation, Kingland Okechukwu Ezeani, described the initiative as a major milestone in the organisation’s expansion across Anambra’s 326 wards.

“COPDEM is a non-partisan citizens’ movement committed to promoting good governance, transparency, and political consciousness from the grassroots up,” Ezeani said. “By joining us, members become part of a powerful network dedicated to shaping a better Nigeria, free from the limitations of partisan politics.”

Ezeani emphasised that the newly inaugurated executives will spearhead civic awareness campaigns ahead of two critical elections: the August 16 senatorial by-election and the November 8 governorship poll.

While noting that COPDEM had previously operated virtually in the state, Ezeani said the physical inauguration provided an opportunity for direct interaction with members. “This is about meeting face-to-face, sharing ideas, and equipping our people to become true ambassadors of democracy at the polling units,” he explained.

The event also featured political engagement, with African Democratic Congress (ADC) senatorial candidate Chief Donald Chidi Amangbo addressing attendees — the only invited candidate to do so. Ezeani said COPDEM’s platform remains open to all candidates committed to good governance, regardless of party affiliation.

Dignitaries in attendance included ADC National Deputy Chairman (South East) Chief Anayo Arinze, ADC Anambra State Chairman Comrade Patrick Obianyo, COPDEM Board of Trustees members Dr. Hyginus Anedo and Ambassador Kingsland, and several other senior political figures and campaign representatives.

With the unveiling of its ward executives, COPDEM says it is poised to become a key driver of voter engagement and civic participation in Anambra, ensuring that citizens’ voices are heard in the state’s democratic process.
