The Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM) has announced the formal inauguration of 3,480 local government and ward executives across Anambra State.

The event is scheduled to hold on Sunday, August 10, 2025, at the DCC Nnewi ground, located near the popular Nkwo Triangle in Nnewi-North Local Government Area.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that this massive political mobilisation effort forms part of COPDEM’s grassroots consolidation strategy ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The coalition, known for its vocal stance on democratic reforms and opposition to electoral malpractice, is expected to use the inauguration to deepen its operational presence across all 21 local government areas and 326 wards in Anambra.

The mass rally, which will follow the official swearing-in of LGA and ward executives, is anticipated to draw thousands of supporters, civil society activists, pro-democracy campaigners, and community leaders.

The newly appointed executives are expected to lead mobilization efforts in their respective zones, coordinate civic education campaigns, and serve as liaisons between the central COPDEM structure and the grassroots.

COPDEM, which gained national prominence after the disputed 2023 general elections, has since positioned itself as a watchdog platform for electoral accountability and citizen action.

Founded as a coalition of citizens, legal professionals, students, human rights activists, and political reformists, the group has grown into a formidable national structure, with operations spanning all six geopolitical zones in Nigeria.

In recent months, the organisation has ramped up its activities in the South East, particularly in Anambra, Ebonyi, and Enugu States, following growing concerns over voter apathy, electoral violence, and political intimidation in the region.

The upcoming inauguration in Anambra is expected to be COPDEM’s largest state-level deployment since its formation.

According to organisers, the August 10 rally will serve as a symbolic declaration of the group’s readiness to counter anti-democratic forces and empower citizens at the grassroots to defend their votes and demand good governance.

Security arrangements are being finalised in collaboration with local authorities, while transportation logistics are in place to mobilize members from the 21 LGAs of the state.

COPDEM leaders have extended an open invitation to all democracy advocates, youth groups, and concerned citizens to attend and lend their voices to the growing demand for electoral justice and institutional reforms.

Speakers at the event will include prominent pro-democracy figures, community organisers, legal analysts, and regional leaders of the coalition.

Observers note that the mass mobilisation effort in Anambra may serve as a template for similar launches in other parts of the country, especially in battleground states like Lagos, Rivers, and Kano ahead of 2027.

The coalition has also hinted at a possible unveiling of new community monitoring tools and digital reporting systems aimed at tracking election-related incidents, voter suppression, and breaches of the electoral act.

As COPDEM continues to expand its influence, the Anambra inauguration stands as a strategic step toward unifying pro-democracy voices across the nation and challenging what the group has called the “entrenched culture of impunity” in Nigeria’s electoral process.
