(DDM) – The Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM) has formally welcomed former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, following his decision to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the move as a defining moment in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.

In a press statement issued in Abuja on December 31, 2025, COPDEM said Obi’s entry into the ADC represents a convergence of shared democratic values anchored on integrity, accountability, inclusion, and people-oriented governance.

The coalition noted that Obi’s decision reflects a deliberate rejection of politics driven by self-interest and governance devoid of compassion, stressing that his long-standing reputation for prudence, transparency, and fiscal discipline resonates deeply with millions of Nigerians yearning for a country that genuinely works for its citizens.

COPDEM, which describes itself as a frontline organization committed to the defense of democracy, the rule of law, social justice, and the protection of the people’s mandate, said it considers Obi a natural ally in the collective struggle to strengthen democratic institutions in Nigeria.

According to the statement, the coalition assured Obi of its full backing, disclosing that over five million registered COPDEM members across the country stand solidly behind him, alongside more than 20,000 members who have already formally registered with the African Democratic Congress.

The group openly endorsed Obi’s leadership and vision, reaffirming its belief in his widely known message that a “New Nigeria is possible,” provided leadership is anchored on competence, character, and capacity.

COPDEM further described Obi’s alignment with the ADC as more than a personal political move, but the arrival of a broad-based movement inspired by hope and driven by young people, workers, professionals, and marginalized Nigerians seeking purposeful leadership.

The coalition emphasized that Obi’s presence in the ADC signals the emergence of a new political culture, one that prioritizes service over personal ambition, solutions over empty slogans, and unity over division.

In its statement, COPDEM pledged to actively support the ADC through nationwide mobilization, sustained civic engagement, voter education, and the defense of democratic values before, during, and after the 2027 general elections.

The organization expressed confidence that the collaboration between COPDEM and the ADC would help reposition Nigeria toward a path of productivity, accountability, and shared prosperity.
