Nigeria has recalled its fighter aircraft deployed to monitor the situation in Benin Republic after the country’s authorities regained control following a failed coup attempt on Sunday.
The aircraft, sent from Lagos for surveillance, were stood down in the afternoon as intelligence indicated no immediate threat to Nigeria’s security.
The coup attempt, led by Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri, involved an early-morning attack on President Patrice Talon’s residence and a takeover of the national broadcaster, ORTB.
However, loyal forces quickly countered, surrounding the TV station and securing key facilities by nightfall.
“The situation is under control. The National Guard has everything surrounded,” a senior security official said.
President Talon is safe but hasn’t made a public statement.
The streets of Cotonou were tense but largely calm by evening, with no widespread violence reported.
The Benin government is expected to release more details soon, including those involved in the attempt.
