The Ogun State High Court in Abeokuta has annulled Alexander Macgregor’s installation as Olu of Ilawo, deeming the process illegal.
Justice Olatokunbo Majekodunmi has instructed Macgregor to stop presenting himself as the Olu of Orile Ilawo. This order will remain in effect until the court resolves the ongoing suit concerning his nomination.
This ruling stems from a lawsuit initiated by the Ogunsanya-Ariku Royal Family. They aim to invalidate Macgregor’s claim to the throne and prevent his installation.
The judge expressed strong criticism towards the government for moving forward with Macgregor’s installation despite pending court cases. He labeled this action as impunity and a blatant disrespect for the judiciary.
Justice Majekodunmi emphasized the legal duty of involved parties to avoid actions that could undermine the court’s integrity.
This principle is essential for maintaining public trust in the legal system.
Consequently, the court issued a mandatory injunction that bars Macgregor from claiming the title of Olu of Ilawo.
This ruling restores the throne to its status prior to the filing of the case.
Additionally, the judge mandated the removal of all official symbols and instruments of authority granted to Macgregor by the government.
She asserted that continuing with the installation while a case is pending undermines the court’s authority.
The Ogunsanya-Ariku family initiated legal action after the traditional council allegedly replaced approved chiefs with unfamiliar names during the selection process for the Olu of Orile Ilawo following the previous king’s death on December 24, 2021.
They aimed to challenge Macgregor’s claim and halt the installation.
In response to the ruling, Dr. David Ogunsanya, Secretary to the Aiku and Ogunsanya dynasty, praised the judiciary for its commitment to justice.
He encouraged the press to report on the situation, acknowledging their role as society’s watchdogs.
Recognizing the government’s resistance, the stakeholders in Orile Ilawo, led by the Ogunsanya-Ariku family, opted for legal action instead of resorting to violence.
They aimed to maintain peace within the community.
Ogunsanya expressed satisfaction that a competent court nullified Macgregor’s installation. The court instructed him to stop claiming the title of Olu of Orile Ilawo.
He warned that any actions contrary to the court’s ruling would be considered contempt and reported accordingly.
He further warned the public not to acknowledge Macgregor as Olu of Orile Ilawo. Recognizing him could pose risks.
