The Federal High Court in Lagos has ruled in favour of #EndSARS protesters and ordered the Nigeria Police to pay ₦10 million in compensation.

Justice Musa Kakaki gave the ruling on Wednesday, July 23, 2025.

He ordered both the Inspector-General of Police and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police to jointly pay the damages.

The court said the police violated the protesters’ rights during the fourth EndSARS memorial held on October 20, 2024.

Justice Kakaki declared that the protesters suffered harassment and abuse without cause.

He stressed that although police officers have power to maintain law and order, they must do so within the rule of law.

He stated that no government agency has the right to suppress lawful protest or peaceful assembly.

According to him, the use of force against the demonstrators was unjustified.

The applicants in the case included Hassan Taiwo Soweto, Uadiale Kingsley, Ilesanmi Kehinde, Osopale Adeseye, Olamilekan Sanusi, and Miss Osugba Blessing.

Several activist groups also joined the case. These include the Education Rights Campaign (ERC), Take It Back Movement (TIBM), and the Campaign for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR).

They had asked the court to declare that their fundamental rights were breached by the police. The court agreed and ruled in their favour.

This judgment marks another legal victory for EndSARS protesters. It also sends a clear warning to security agencies against unlawful clampdowns.

More details coming.
