Court Sentences Nigerian Student to Death by Hanging

A High Court in Plateau State has sentenced former student Emmanuel Ude to death by hanging for the 2021 murder of his teacher, Mr. Job Dashe, at Government Technical College, Bukuru.
Justice Silas Bakfur delivered the ruling on Monday, June 30, 2025, declaring Ude guilty of culpable homicide punishable under Sections 221 and 222 of the Plateau State Penal Code, which mandate the death penalty.
The tragic incident which occurred in July 2021, has Ude, a student at the technical college in Jos South Local Government Area, reportedly clashed with Mr. Dashe, who served as the school’s Duty Master.
The confrontation stemmed from a routine check in the dining hall, where Dashe suspected Ude of food theft and asked him to open his food flask for inspection.
According to court evidence, Ude stormed off to his dormitory, returned with a knife, and stabbed Mr. Dashe in the chest.
He fled the scene as the teacher collapsed.
Mr. Dashe was rushed to a nearby hospital along Vom Road, where he was pronounced dead.
Following an extensive police investigation, Ude was arrested and confessed to the crime at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
His statement, along with other key evidence, formed the backbone of the prosecution’s case led by state counsels Nansil Mbah and Solomon Deme.
The trial, which lasted nearly four years, ended with a strong case from the prosecution.
The court ruled the murder was premeditated and intentional.
While the defence counsel, Josil Drinkat, pleaded for mercy on the grounds of the convict’s remorse, Justice Bakfur emphasized the severity of the offense.
“The prosecution has proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. The hands of the court are tied; I can only do what the law prescribes in such a situation,” the judge said.
Emmanuel Ude has been sentenced to death by hanging until certified dead.
